There are many things you can try to crack down on to “save society”. Obesity causes significantly more deaths and complications than tobacco use. Truthfully, without bias, smoking can indeed be unhealthy. However there are so many other activities and products that are injurious to well-being other than cigars, cigarettes, and tobacco. The government benefits from tobacco sales, at least where we live. In Canada, tobacco products are taxed pretty heavily despite protests. They justify it because of the medical costs and consequences of its usage but the taxes they receive far exceed the expenditures of smoking-related medical expenses. The problem is that the government is now cherry-picking what you can and cannot do, in so at their own benefit. When the government wants you to do something to their benefit - i.e. participating and or being drafted into a war, they have no problem nor hesitation doing so. Even if you are not 18, war likely means you will be drafted, young or old. This is the hypocrisy from their end. The government does not care that you risk death, being crippled, and or permanently injured from senseless wars they wage. God forbid you buy some smokes and beers though. This is an extremely undemocratic and unfair move on their end. We have even witnessed some anti-smoking fanatics argue for the complete and utter ban of smokes. Like prohibitions before, they will not work and ultimately will fail. They tried it with alcohol prohibition and failed miserably. People will find ways to smoke either way and even if you make it illegal and a crime to smoke, you would only be supporting the black market and criminal industries. Most if not all people already are aware of the risks and implications of smoking. As long as they do not do it everywhere and bother other people then leave it alone.
